This modern smart fridge doesn’t look too unusual, and the software provides access to the kind of things we might stick to our fridges anyway; a calendar, a shopping list, a page we can write on with our fingers, and access to music-streaming services.

Never go to the supermarket again
The idea of avoiding visits to the supermarket is incredibly appealing, and the smart home is offering a number of different solutions to this “problem” that take advantage of the growing number of delivery services.
If you’ve ever used a recipe book, you’ll no doubt have found yourself experiencing some surprise at the “everyday ingredients” the author assumed you’d have. Now, theoretically, you can have your fridge make sure not only do you have these foods, but fresh too.
There are several different ways you can get groceries delivered online. The two leading ones are supermarket deliveries and box services. Supermarkets offer delivery services and access to a significant part of their range via a website or app. Box services, which tend to be subscription-based, decide for you what they’ll send (based on your preferences) and provide you with all the ingredients to cook a specific meal/meals. This can offer interesting new meals and cooking experiences that might broaden your palate—or it can be a recipe for disaster, requiring you to pay for food it turns out you don’t enjoy, until you can manage to cancel.
When you use a supermarket delivery, you will likely be asked to open an account, and the service may attempt to automatically sell you the same things the following week, or perhaps build up a more sophisticated way of monitoring your usage of different products. This seems very helpful at first, but there is a downside; requiring so little input, you’re likely to end up getting the same recommended products over and over again, and life can get very boring that way. You’re also less likely to spot offers, choosing the convenience of a one-click shop over browsing more slowly and thoughtfully. Research has shown that you’ll save more by changing what you order and picking up the bargains; the same is even more true with delivery. The best approach is to switch supermarkets each time so that the systems think they need to win you back.
